Book Review
by Diane Heilenman
Paul Dorrell, a once rejected but now successful author, art dealer and artist, will give a free talk at 7 p.m. Friday at the Barnes & Noble bookstore at 801 S. Hurstbourne Parkway.
His unconventionally candid 2004 book, "Living the Artist's Life" (Hillstead Publishing: $16.95), is in its second edition of 20,000, double the first edition that sold out with impetus from reviews in Fiberarts Magazine and other journals and talks at art institutions, including the Rhode Island School of Design and the Chicago Artist's Coalition.
Dorrell, of Kansas City, Mo., discusses neuroses, depression, panic employment, booze, dope and other hazards of the art life, as well as persevering and succeeding in the art world. But his subjects are not limited to the emotional; with compelling prose and rare insight he also covers practical topics such as photographing one's work inexpensively, getting placed with galleries nationally, and landing commissions-guiding artists through all the initial steps they must take in preparing for the bigger steps to come.
Barnes & Noble, Borders, Amazon, Hastings, Books-A-Million, Utrecht Art Supplies,
