"Living the Artist's Life: A Guide to Growing, Persevering, and Succeeding in the Art World" by Paul Dorrell (Hillstead Publishing, $23.95, hardcover, non-fiction)

Paul Dorrell is a native Kansan who has successfully established himself in the world of art. He is founder of the Leopold Gallery in Kansas City and has worked as an art consultant for the National D-Day Memorial, the Mayo Clinic and a host of civic and private clients.

Surprisingly, his main passion isn't art, it's writing. He has combined both interests to create "Living the Artist's Life."

"I wrote this book because I'd so often been asked by various universities to address the issues of an artist's life to their graduating students," he says. "Many schools didn't teach much on the subject, and I realized after the first few lectures that a book on the subject would fill what seemed a rather critical void."

Dorrell shares practical advice that struggling artists will find invaluable. But his guidance doesn't stop at the door of his gallery. He is candid and generous in sharing his own private battles with depression, fear and failure. He shines light on the perceived snobbishness of the art world. In doing so, he uncovers the intense humanity that exists behind the artist's drive to create.

"Living the Artist's Life" is available at Barnes and Noble, Borders and Watermark Books. Dorrell will sign copies of his book from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Borders, 1715 N. Rock Road. For more information about Paul Dorrell, visit www.livingtheartistslife.com.
